Repsol has been made an offer it cannot refuse. Argentina has put a $5bn settlement on the table in their dispute over YPF. The Spanish oil company will probably accept it in principle: its biggest shareholders – Caixabank and Pemex of Mexico – are pressing it to do so. Fair enough: the alternative is years of legal battles with a country that has no money. In return, Repsol’s investors must back chief executive Antonio Brufau’s post-YPF strategy.
