Sir, In his Comment “Europe is being hobbled by its expensive energy policy” (October 31), Paolo Scaroni, head of Italy’s main oil and gas company, very convincingly makes the case for a new energy policy to support Europe’s competitiveness, which is being eroded by America’s access to plentiful and significantly cheaper shale gas. His proposed solution of reinforcing our dependence on Russian gas supplies leaves me perplexed, however.
